Lumpy's Note
...As a result of your note I have been overwhelmed with email from Tarsiers and others with their prayers and support in my return bout with cancer. It has given me great support, words can not express how much this has helped me, at a very lonely time in my life. The date for my surgery is 21 September. Believe it or else, that is the earliest they can get it scheduled. It takes a "special" operating room.
Everything was going along fine until they discovered I was a Tarsier. Apparently they now are concerned that that the tumor may actually be an alien implant in the form of a "Bug Eatin Monkey" (I think they have been watching too many "Aliens" videos) All kidding aside, it does take a specially configured OR, after they open me up they will have to do internal radiation treatments, this drives part of the requirements, and the rest is due to the extent of the surgery, it is going to be an all day affair.
They start at 0730 and will work all day and finish-up in the evening. I have a team of surgeons of various specialties that will be working on me (no, Sigorney Weaver is not one of them) We had to get the moon and stars to lineup just-so, to get the right team "Dream Team" of doctors together. This is September and NYC being both a baseball and football town required that we not interfere ... with any pennant race activity.
I won't know how the surgery went probably until the afternoon of the 22nd or morning of the 23rd. They may tell me earlier but I won't remember what they tell me (last time they had to tell me several times because I couldn't comprehend or remember due to the anesthesia and pain medication) They said to expect to stay in the hospital for at least 10 days, and about two months at home.
They wont know about follow-on treatments until after they see how things look... "inside Lumpy Davis" Chemo generally doesn't start right away after surgery, you need some time to heal first. I don't think I am eligible for external radiation, I had a bunch the first time and you can only have so many treatments.
I have been busy seeing and being examined by some of the doctors on my Dream Team, this next week will be more of the same. The other day one tried to pick my nose via my butt. I feel okay, but get tired fairly easily, and I have some pain from the tumor that keeps me from getting around.
The more activity (walking or driving a car) exacerbates the pain. So I try to take it easy.
My Surgery is going to be at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center it is "the worlds oldest and largest institution devoted to cancer prevention, treatment, research and education... They offer state-of-the-art facilities and expert medical care"
